Work on the steaming bays
Last year (2009) the decision was made to rebuild the steaming bays to cater better for larger locos and to remove the traverser as it had come to the end of its life. The bays are now arranged around and set at the same level as the turntable. A new access track from the turntable to the station line has being installed eliminating the need for the traverser. One end of the old traverser pit has been converted into a steaming bay for small engines, giving better access to them for steam raising and maintenance. The track still caters for locos of 3½" and 5" gauge. Words and photos by David Watt
